Bioscience Updates - October 2017

T-Gen Tour

The sophomore Honors Cell Biology Class toured Translational Genomics (T-Gen) on September 27th.  Students visited pancreatic cancer labs, the Center for Rare Childhood Diseases, and the Proteomics lab.  Students learned about the mission of T-Gen as well as a number of non-lab careers utilized by the organization.

CTE Flex Conference:

All HOSA members have an exciting opportunity to attend the Flex Conference on November 8, 2017 at the Talking Stick Resort. Students will have opportunities to listen to many renowned speakers, learn about potential fields of interest and there is also a surgical simulation that students can view.

All in all it’s an exciting day for the participants. Be on the lookout for permission slips, and if you can chaperone, please contact Mrs. Landry or Mrs. Landreville.

Pictures coming soon…..

Bioscience Updates - September 2017

Department of Basic Medical Sciences Offers Six-Week Program to High School Students

Fourteen high school students from the Phoenix area participated in a six-week internship program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, which provided them the opportunity to train in a laboratory setting and explore careers in research and medicine.

Three CREST students (all who applied) were accepted: Joe Velazquez, Mason Hendrix, and Ryan Lisiewski. Student feedback was positive and we recommend future students apply for this summer program.

HOSA:

The next HOSA meeting is Friday 9/15 from 2:20-3:30pm, ALL CREST students are encouraged to join the #HOSAHYPE. The process for paying dues has changed; please do not pay them online. Please send the $30 dues with your student on 9/15; we have to pay as a group.

DaVinci Robot:

In conjunction with Abrazo Health, Mr. Howardell has arranged for the DaVinci surgical training robot to be in the CREST building on 9/12. There are 3 possible time rotations to choose from: Session 1 9:00 - 11:30 Session 2 11:30 - 2:00 Session 3 2:00 - 4:30. Invitations to see the presentations and test-drive the robot have been sent to all CREST students. Please encourage your child to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity.

The Bioscience Mentor Program:

The Bioscience Mentor Program is having their first Meet and Greet party on 9/7 after school in the presentation hall. We have paired all freshmen who responded to the survey with an upper classman. Pizza will be served and games will be played. If your freshman did not fill out the survey but would like to get involved, please email Riley Reed ([email protected]), the president, or Kyle Kline ([email protected]) immediately.

Parent Chaperones Needed

Field trip season is upon us and we will be in need of chaperones soon. The district has changed the process for chaperone approval. Every chaperone/volunteer must repeat the process annually, even if the chaperone is a district employee and/or certified teacher. The current turn around time for continuing applications is ~2 weeks.

HOSA will need ~4 chaperones (1-2 males) for the FLEX conference 11/8/17 from approximately 8am-5pm. Please notify Michelle Landreville or Mrs. Landry if you are willing to chaperone AND to confirm that you are an approved 17-18 candidate. The district will deny our field trip paperwork if the listed chaperones are not preapproved.

Thinking ahead, HOSA will also need 2-3 (1-2 males) chaperones for the 3 day State Leadership Conference in Tucson at the Westin LaPaloma resort 4/2-4/4/18.

Bioscience Mentoring for Freshmen

Did you know that the Bioscience program runs a mentoring program for all incoming Bioscience freshmen?

The mentors will be sending out a survey to all incoming freshmen that will be used to help pair them with an upperclassman with similar interests.

Please encourage your freshman to participate and make the most of a peer who is there to help.
